Article Abstract:

A study shows that human class II genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are associated with multiple sclerosis, a chronic demyelinating disease, inflammatory in character, of the central nervous system. The severity of the disease is associated with different alleles (DR2a and DR2b that are always inherited together) of the polymorphic MHC class II genes while in humans the main association is with the DR2 haplotype, which encompass a bewildering array of genes affecting immune responses.

Research presented concerns the physiological aspects of demyelinating diseases such as Guillain-Barre syndrome and Multiple Sclerosis. Research on the nervous system suggests that, in addition to myelin, ion channels may also be impacted by these diseases.
